Our Goal is a Foal

Importantly, we work hard to gain each mare owner's confidence in our facility and our procedures. We keep a close eye on each mare or mare and foal as to weight and condition so that their owner will be satisfied with the care and attention that was received while at DeGraff Stables and bring them back again next year.

We conduct all breeding, either cooled semen or frozen semen, by artificial insemination to ensure safer, more sanitary conditions and to encourage a high number of pregnancies. Diagnostics such as a culture, cytology, biopsy or histopath are conducted as required. We have a daily teasing program that aids in cycle determination but is confirmed by ultrasound. Many mare owners, without the ability to maintain a good lighting program for open/barren mares will send them to us in late November or early December to prepare for an early season breeding.

While many of the mares that arrive during breeding season have booked to one of the on-farm stallions, a large quantity will contract for outside stallion services. For these mare owners we arrange cycle management, semen ordering and insemination. Fed-Ex shipments are received daily at our farm and in addition courier service is available to pick up shipments at the airport if a counter to counter shipment is required to meet the mare's ovulation schedule.

Our large foaling stalls are continuously monitored by closed-circuit TV cameras and a full-time foaling technician. Every reasonable precaution is taken to ensure a safe birth and a live foal. A colostrum bank is maintained and refreshed each year. We imprint each foal and halter them right away. All foals are lead in and out of their stalls, thus mares with foals require two attendants. All foals accompany their dam into the breeding room thus less stress is placed on them.

Mares return home with a copy of their detailed breeding records, health records, progesterone level and recommendations for her care through foaling.
